Traveling across country with my mother is quite the experience. I mean, we get along fantastic. That’s not the problem. But I haven’t done it in so long and it’s the music that tickles or rather, sucks ass. Radio is a disgrace. Too many commercials, then one shit ass song after another. Often we gravitate to the oldies station. Or even classic rock w/ Van Halen or Billy Joel is better than all the annoying Christian rock stations – which Texas has nothing but. Oh how they love Jesus and their Texas sized crosses. Not that this is some grand revelation. But it just makes me wonder why the hell do people even listen anymore? Even Sheryl Crow’s new single sounds like an a mediocre B-side. And I used to like her music. But it’s hardly worthy of any radio play. Devil take your money…Love is free? Easy to sing when you’re a gazillionaire. (More on that later.) That was the only new song I heard. I’ve had the privilege of reliving Janet Jackson’s “Nasty Boys” twice, on two different radio stations. The 80’s hour is very popular. As if there is no other music worth highlighting – I guess people like hearing what they’re familiar with. People are like sheep. Following. If it’s on the radio, must be great! Well, this doesn’t work for me. And as Janet sang her outro a second time, my mother finally looked up from her knitting and said, “You know? I really don’t like this one bit!” Next time, I’m buying books on tape – or buying some device to hook up my ipod. You can only go so far on NPR’s Car Talk with Click and Clack; the only thing we’ve truly enjoyed on our journey to date.

Because, more so than anything else that happens to you in high school, yearbook photos stay with you and have the potential to permanently haunt you. HAUNT. Like, for example, the yearbook photos on this list. People in the music industry are all about their image. The image sells everything. As Jennifer Lopez proved, singing talent is am […]

12 Awful Rock Films, That Are So Bad They're Good...
Lisztomania (1975) Why it blows: Because it has nothing to do with the life of the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt, allegedly portrayed here by The Who’s Roger Daltrey. Nor does it have anything to do with reality. Director Ken Russell presents fellow composer Richard Wagner as Listzt’s bitter rival (in truth, the two musician […]

Dummy Interviews Lindstrom...
I read somewhere you were in a Bon Jovi style metal band in your earlier years. Is that true? I did that in the early 90s. We made our own tunes and tried to make heavy metal. It wasn’t any good. These days school bands all have their own MySpace and try and get signed. I didn’t know anything about record deals back then. I still have t […]

Did the Black Eyed Peas Steal Adam Freeland's 'Mancry' For Their #1 Album, The E.N.D.?
As one of Rock’s stops on this cross-country journey and also being from the same blood-line, I felt it necessary to comment. Here in the state of New Mexico I absolutely was stunned my first year by the tackiness in both fashion and musical taste. We (I’m one now) definitely are stuck some where in the 1970’s and lack that LA “cool”. Even so the mid-evil wanderers of this part of the country can still access Sirius Satellite Radio in their vehicles. Duh, like get into this century Rocks!
Even though I am one of Sheryl’s biggest fans…I cannot comment on her current single as I have not heard it yet. Although from what I have read it is politically driven and is more on the country side of the music spectrum. Two things I hate in my music…politics and whiny lyrics (otherwise known as “country”.)
I can comment on the fact that Rock needs to get her s*** together and get an ipod adapter. From what I know of this Rock, she is in fact IN the music industry. I’m no technical genius but even I have one and I’m just a dumb actress.
Until you ride on in to 2008 and get on the ipod train….for the love of god- get a book on tape for the last leg of your trip. Your poor mother pushed you out of her woo-hah…don’t make her suffer any more.
yeah dumbass. get an ipod.
As a dude who drove 2000 miles this weekend, I think I agree with commenter #3. Get an ipod and subscribe to NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me podcast or This American Life. Either / or / both.
