Philip Sherburne on The Year In Techno...
This year, techno may have surprised me even less than house, but it often moved me more. Part of that may be accountable simply to my mood: pessimistic, a little antisocial, given to Romantic-style reveries. Techno hit all these notes in 2009. For dark, steely, ominous, sky-splitting, velvety doom, you couldn’t do better than Manchester’s Modern […]

20 Tracks Every Broken Beat Fan Should Know...
The beat changed one day. Four-to-the-floor’s steady dominant drum march fractured, as chaotic new patterns emerged in the ranks of uniformity. It was a jungle of rhythms, drums, […]

DeRogatis on Pixies' 'Doolittle' tour: 'a cynical corporation cashing in on blatant nostalgia... a hipper version of Creedence Clearwater Revisited or Journey'
When a group of revered and influential rockers come back together after a decade of acrimonious separation and/or inactivity, all but the most hard-hearted punks can grant them one lap around the reunion circuit playing the old should-have-been-hits, if only to collect the accolades and the cash that probably eluded them the first time. Boston’s proto […]

Digital Music News: Digital Music News, using data from BigChampagne, attempted to answer that question using the example of Jay-Z, a relevant, touring artist with a massive catalog. Jay-Z has played lots of gigs, and has the best sense for what crowds want to hear. But online channels also offer some guidance, especially when multiple platforms are consider […]
